JAMES BRINE TOLPUDDLE MARTYR IN CANADA
NEW HISTORY BOOK
A new book on the life and history of the Tolpuddle Martyr, James Brine has just been published. The book covers the life and history of this heroic man from his arrival in Canada, in 1844, until his death in Blanshard Township in 1902. He lived approximately two thirds of his life in south-western Ontario. He left England as an early pioneer of British trade unions, and then spent the rest of his life as a pioneer farmer in Ontario.
The book gives a new insight into the life of James Brine in Canada. The title of the book is: TOLPUDDLE MARTYR; PIONEER FARMER JAMES BRINE IN CANADA 1844 – 1902. It contains new and original research, not previously found in other publications on the Tolpuddle Martyrs. There are many new unpublished, drawings, photographs and maps. Many aspects of his life are covered, including new biographical details. His new life in Canada was a stark contrast to what he left behind in England.
The author lives in the beautiful town of St. Marys, also known as the “Stonetown”. James Brine, his wife, Elizabeth and many of his family are buried in the town cemetery.
