THEOPHILUS WASHINGTON STANDFIELD PHOTO
Here is a photgraph dated c. 1870 - 1900 of T. Stan(d)field. The photo was taken in London, Ontario. It is a person who is a member of the Order of Oddfellows, a benevolent society. The "collar" is one worn by Odd Fellows and the jewel attached to it shows that the man was a past presiding officer (Noble Grand) of a lodge.
It may be t...hat of Theophilus Washington Standfield, the son of John Standfield, one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs
Theophilus was a nephew of James and Elizabeth Brine, who were living in Blanshard Township, Perth County during this period. Blanshard is near the town of St. Marys.

SPECIAL COPY OF THE MARTYRS OF TOLPUDDLE BOOK
With the Tolpuddle Festival fast approaching this month, it is more than worth mentioning about a special copy of the 1934 TUC book THE BOOK OF THE MARTYRS OF TOLPUDDLE 1834-1934 which was published as part of the 100th anniversary of the Martyrs conviction and transportation.
The anniversary book was presented in Toronto, Ontario to s...even of the descendants of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, at a banquet, held during the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada Golden Jubilee Convention. Three of the descendants of James Brine attended the banquet, including his son, John T. and two grandsons who had been chosen by the family. The two grandsons were James S. Brine and J. Phillip Brine.
The photo shows the inscription inside the book awarded to Phillip Brine. It was signed by John Marchbank, General Secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen.

The book launch occured in St. Marys, Ontario on June 14. Family members from St. Marys, Blanshard Township and Stratford attended. Many local residents came to the event to have their books signed by the author.

JAMES BRINE TOLPUDDLE MARTYR IN CANADA
NEW HISTORY BOOK
A new book on the life and history of the Tolpuddle Martyr, James Brine has just been published. The book covers the life and history of this heroic man from his arrival in Canada, in 1844, until his death in Blanshard Township in 1902. He lived approximately two thirds of his life in south-western Ontario. He left England as an early pioneer of British trade unions, and then spent the rest of his life as a pioneer farmer in Ontario.
The book gives a new insight into the life of James Brine in Canada. The title of the book is: TOLPUDDLE MARTYR; PIONEER FARMER JAMES BRINE IN CANADA 1844 – 1902. It contains new and original research, not previously found in other publications on the Tolpuddle Martyrs. There are many new unpublished, drawings, photographs and maps. Many aspects of his life are covered, including new biographical details. His new life in Canada was a stark contrast to what he left behind in England.
The author lives in the beautiful town of St. Marys, also known as the “Stonetown”. James Brine, his wife, Elizabeth and many of his family are buried in the town cemetery.
The printed book is available for $16, including GST. A CD version in PDF format is $7.50. Postage is extra. Both are available directly from the author.
